SOLE CLAW/MYAGI

RELEASES: PPR001, PPR004, PPR006, PPR010 (remix)

Sole Claw is the dark side of one of Canada's most reknowned breakbeat producers, created to allow an outlet for the harder side of breaks.

Myagi aka Sole Claw aka Andrew Mavor has shot up like a rocket over the last year. Representing Canada internationally, he has played from Seoul to San Francisco, Halifax to Brighton, Taipei to Toronto, and has become touted as the next major North American breaks don. Comparisons to the other big names of the scene seem obvious, but don't really do justice to the range of work Myagi has put out, as his releases have varied from hip hop big beat infused party breaks through to jackin house and techy big room floor fillers.

Dropping a guitar in favor of a synthesizer well before finishing high school, Mavor's musical journey has landed him across the board support. The late John Peel (the Peel Sessions) used a Myagi track to open his show. Front 242 have sent kudos on a track ("Sole Claw - Smartbomb") that was licensed to Fingerlickin for the Plump DJ's album "Saturday Night Lotion."

The string of red hot releases that followed have landed him sets on the BBC, the CBC and Crystal Method's Community Service and support from everyone from Adam Freeland and Meat Katie through to Fatboy Slim and Freddy Fresh. Myagi's multi-genre approach to dance music has matured into a true journey through b-boy and rave culture, mashing up past and present in one of the most high energy, pounding experiences a club could play host to. His shows at clubs like The Guvernment in Toronto have led to high profile gigs internationally, including such highlights as Fabric in London, Fusion in Taiwan and San Francisco's Love Parade, where Myagi played three parties in 12 hours.

His upcoming releases include remixes for Ursula 1000 (coming out on Thievery Corporations label ESL), hip hop don Maestro (as in Fresh Wes), and a giant remix for Dylan Rhymes and Ricky Stone. He has two tracks licensed to JDS's "Beats N Bobs" compilation on Functional Breaks, more remixes in the works, and a release schedule that puts most labels to shame. Touring constantly, Myagi is one of the hardest working men in the North American dance music, and, with his profile rising at an extremely rapid pace he has quickly turned himself into a staple of the global breaks scene.

DISLEXIK

RELEASES: PPR003, PPR004 (Remix)

Dislexik a.k.a. Jeff Prankev is a reclusive promoter, producer, DJ and drummer from Saskatoon, SK. His career in electronica began in high school where he began producing industrial music under the name "Phyle". After a few demo tapes and a handful of live performances (and a few years of hanging around Deko-ze and the PPM crew) he started picking up some acid techno and big beat records, and eventually a set of decks. A few months after that, he got his first residency at the short-lived Club Lux in Saskatoon. Typically playing all night, his sets moved from downtempo to breaks, house into techno, trance into even hardcore and jungle at times. This short stint gave him a chance to play around with different tempos and sounds and find out what he really wanted to specialize in.

It was around this time that Dislexik hooked up with the Uninhibited Soundsystem, a local collective of DJ’s, producers and musicians who strove to promote dance music with spirit, intelligence and integrity. He started to focus on two styles of music: techno and breaks. Inspired by such DJ’s as Tipper, Misjah, Chris Liberator and Omar Santana, he wanted to play dark music with lots of energy, edge and intelligence.

While his DJ career was slowly growing he started to find time to go back to producing now and then. He started by creating loops on CD to layer over sets, then moved on to writing full tracks and some mashups. Though this got him some attention in his home province, it took a long time to get noticed elsewhere. It was time to get some new connections.

The one thing he hadn't really attempted to do was promote events so he joined forces with two companies, Flychild Promotions in Saskatoon and S4 in Regina, to bring some talent to his small hometown scene. This gave him a chance to meet some pretty influential people including DJ Czech, D-Monic, Misjah, DJ Marcus and many others. Unfortunately his promoting career didn't go so well and after a few club nights and one disaster of a party he gave it up to stay sane and focus on the music side of the scene.

Taking a bit of a break from the electronica scene, he picked up his sticks again and joined up with one of western Canada's most infamous horror rock bands, The New Jacobin Club. This helped to renew his interest in music and get him back in the studio, though in a much different form. After a year of recording and touring with the band he was ready to sit at the computer and start banging out tracks again.

With the help of Robb G, he put out a white label 12" in 2003 which finally got his name out in the bigger cities. This at least helped get this small town boy gigs in some places that don't tend to book people that don't have T.O. or BC after their name. Eventually a track found its way to one of the guys heading a new Canadian breaks label: D-Monic at Pure Phunk Recordings. They released his first official release, "An Air of Dawn", featuring a remix by the notorious DJ Love in 2004.

He continues to play drums with NJC while writing beats in his free time. Current ambitions are to do a few remixes, record another EP with the band and release a few more records with Pure Phunk. Dislexik is 24 years old and still resides in Saskatoon.

SPENCE

RELEASES: PPR008, PPRD003

Spence's skills on the Technics have gained him undeniable respect as one of Canada's top Breakbeat DJs. Now with emerging prowess as a producer and saxophonist, he is rapidly becoming a certifiable triple threat in the modern music scene.

Andrew Spence was born in New Westminster BC, Canada. He took piano lessons until the age of 13 then switched his focus to the saxophone. Showing natural musical ability, he excelled on the horn and earned awards at national levels for his soloing. In 1988, young Spence picked up his first set of decks and began spinning hip-hop and R&B at house and hall parties. After high school, he drifted away from the saxophone and sold his decks and wax.

The silence didn't last long as Drew found himself hanging around in Vancouver's underground electronic music scene. 1994 rolled around and he was back spinning, only now he was blending up rude electronic rhythms, most notably Breakbeats. In a short time he was playing around Vancouver's warehouse circuit as DJ Slim, a name that fit his slender physique and freestyle mixing technique. Slim quickly became a staple in the electronic music underground by amazing party-goers across Canada and the western U.S. with his deep mixes and furious scratching. For obvious reasons, he has long since put the DJ Slim moniker to rest and is now billed simply as SPENCE. He remains notorious for delivering intensely skilled DJ performances that shock trainspotters and fellow DJs alike.

In early 2001, Andrew picked up a saxophone for the first time in 9 years and the reunion has been prolific. He quickly acquired a mic rig and introduced live saxophone into his DJ sets. The result is a stunning performance by a veteran turntable technician and gifted instrumentalist. In the past 4 years Spence has elevated his musicianship through private study, performance, experimentation, and university level scholastics. His sax stylings have been featured on Vancouver house labels Leaf and Village, as well as appearing on the legendary Rennie Pilgrem's album 'Pilgremage' on the world's biggest breaks label, TCR.

Currently, Spence is currently signed as a producer to Toronto's Pure Phunk Recordings, with his first release scheduled for Summer '05. He spins for local Breaks squad, Twenty Hz, among others and is considered a venerable DJ talent from coast to coast and abroad. He plays sax with Vancouver's favorite funk machine, Five Alarm Funk as well as with many other acoustic and electric groups. Drew is also finishing his Jazz Studies diploma at Capilano College in North Vancouver. His future focus will remain on composition, production, and performance in both the electronic and acoustic realms.

MR. FUDGE

RELEASES: PPRD004

New addition to Pure Phunk Recordings, MR FUDGE (aka Yusuf Akhtar)...Canadian born breakbeat dj and producer is intense, energetic, and versatile in each solid set that he delivers. Having held residencies in Central and Western Canada since 1997, he is now currently based in Seoul, Korea...spinning for Sickboy Productions at the super club 'M2', as well as for his Breakbeat Massive Crew throughout the Pacific Rim.

Yusuf has always been heavily influenced by a variety of breaks, from hip-hop / trip-hop, midtempo funk and big beat, to the more current sounds of nu skool breaks. Having supported the local underground electronic scene since 95' in the prairies, run by DJ Deko-ze and the P.P.M collective, it was not until 97' that he got his start at a community radio station called CFCR, in his hometown of Saskatoon Saskatchewan. This is where he would drop the original broken beats of classic funk, Motown and disco (from P-funk, George Clinton, James Brown and Herbie Hancock to Chaka Khan, Earth Wind and Fire, Sister Sledge, Donna Summers and Kool & the Gang to name a few). This was also the year that he witnessed fat sets by Howie B, Czech, John Kelly, Slim, Spilt Milk, Jadybug and Hubbz. After seeing these dj's lay down the breaks, he quickly realized the sound that he needed to follow.

In the summer of 97', Yusuf decided to plan a trip out to Ireland to visit one of his best friend's who lived in Belfast. The trip was also to pick up records that he knew he wouldn't be able to find back in Toon town. It was here that he met Kyomi, Ireland's top breakbeat dj at the time, who had headlined numerous shows with some of the UK's heavyweight breakbeat acts (such as Mr. Scruff, Danmass, Dub Pistols...). Shortly after meeting Kyomi, Yusuf had convinced him to come back to Canada to try out different surroundings. Kyomi helped school Yusuf to a UK standard of breaks, and it is his influence that can be seen in Yusuf's hard hitting and aggressive mixing style.

After playing numerous club nights and parties across central and Western Canada, it was in 2001 that Yusuf became interested in the production aspect of electronic music. Hearing production work from Canadian artists such as Dislexik, John Delerious, Robb G, D-Monic, Zoo Sound System, Khanfucious, Myagi and Czech... Yusuf started learning tips on 'beat construction' from close friend Happycat. This was shortly before he decided to move to Korea in 2002. The big move to Asia was not only to challenge him to gain recognition in the Pacific Rim, but to also push his production work...and to develop a sound that best encompasses his energy and intensity behind the decks.

'Hard Funk' best describes his production work, and his live dj sets. Not only does Mr Fudge hammer out the best of breakbeats (Nu Skool, funk, two-step and electro)...he plays all tempo's of fat beats (hip hop, trip hop, house and d'n'b). He is a veteran dj who can lay down the fat killer breaks on any stage. Keep an eye out for this breakbeat technician!
